Your air brake system is complex enough, but ensuring its compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) standards as well as those set by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) doesn’t have to be. At Kimball Midwest, we offer the right parts to make sure your air brake systems are fully compliant, helping you avoid costly fines and ensuring the safety and efficiency of your vehicles.

Understanding Compliance for Air Brake Systems

DOT and SAE set stringent regulations for anything on the roads, most notably braking systems. When air brake fittings are compliant, it means they meet the specific standards and requirements established by the DOT and SAE organizations. Here are some things to consider when it comes to an air brake system.

  1. Construction: Tubing and fittings are constructed to meet DOT and SAE regulations for use.
  2. Identification and Labeling: DOT-compliant fittings are marked with specific identifiers. The manufacturer’s name or logo, size, manufacturing date and SAEJ844 will be present on approved DOT air brake tubing. Air brake fittings will show the size and have “DOT” somewhere on the fitting itself always. This marking helps in verifying that the fittings meet regulatory standards.
  3. Testing Performance Standards: These fittings must undergo rigorous testing to ensure they can handle the demands of a heavy-duty air brake system. This includes tests such as for pressure rating, vibration resistance and temperature tolerance.

Who Needs to Comply?

DOT regulations apply to any commercial motor vehicle operator. This is defined by several criteria, including any driver who:

  • Transports hazardous materials.
  • Has a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds.
  • Transports 16 or more passengers, including the driver, without compensation.
  • Transports nine or more passengers, including the driver, for compensation.
