Storing Spray Paint the Safe and Organized Way

Look around your shop. Do you have spray paint cans sitting out in the open? It may not seem like a big deal, but aerosol cans pose major safety and environmental hazards if they are not properly stored.

Spray paint is categorized by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) as a Category 1 flammable liquid, which means it has a flashpoint below 73.4°F and a boiling point at or below 95°F.

In other words, aerosol paints are highly flammable, and exposure to direct sunlight, heat sources or subfreezing conditions could have disastrous consequences. That’s why it’s important to properly store spray paints and other aerosols.

Once your aerosol paint cans are open, an FM-approved flammable safety cabinet is the right storage solution. These sturdy cabinets safely contain your spray paints and other hazardous chemicals, reducing the risk of fire in your shop. Other sizes are available for order through our Non-Stock Department.

An Aerosol Can Cabinet is a good storage solution for unopened cans. It holds up to 71 cans, which can be organized in the slotted separators for easy identification and access. It has locking cam doors, as well, keeping your spray paints secured until you need them. This cabinet is constructed of powder-coated steel for durability.

For storing a smaller quantity of unopened spray paint, the 12-can capacity Aerosol Can Rack is a good way to hold your cans while keeping them organized and accessible. It can be wall-mounted, placed on top of standard Kimball Midwest storage bins or carried between workstations. Another option is the self-dispensing Aerosol Can Cabinet with a holding capacity of 30 cans. Both storage options are constructed of powder-coated steel.
