In a shop, every tool and element is important. Even the smallest parts can make a huge difference. This is especially true with fasteners.

Fasteners play a critical role in many industries and are the backbone of virtually every structure, product or piece of equipment. Without them, everything would fall apart – literally.

That is why you need to ensure you have a quality fastener system for your shop. Taking the time now to invest in a top-of-the-line fastener system will save you both time and money in the long run.

Here are some typical issues customers have and ways you can upgrade your fastener system.

You have Grade 5 fasteners.

Grade 5 fasteners can be used for a variety of applications and have a minimum tensile strength of 120,000 psi. If you want the best quality fasteners as well as higher tensile strength and reliability, Grade 8 fasteners are the way to go.

Grade 8 fasteners are best to use in high-stress applications, like in heavy machinery. Their minimum tensile strength is 150,000 psi.

Don’t take chances with your fasteners, as failure can lead to major problems and serious consequences. With Grade 8 fasteners, you don’t have to worry if they will be strong enough for the job at hand like you do with Grade 5. Transitioning from Grade 5 to Grade 8 can not only improve the reliability of your shop’s operations; it will also give you piece of mind, no matter the application.

You have hex head cap screws and washers but not nuts.

Take a look at the fasteners in your shop. If you discover that you mainly have head cap screws and washers, consider getting the corresponding nuts.

While some applications only call for the cap screw and washer, you should still have nuts as all these parts are designed to go together. Having nuts on hand also ensures you are covered for any project or application and you don’t have to scramble to find one in the corresponding grade.

Remember to match the grade of all components in the fastening system to prevent failures. Your fastening system is only as strong as the weakest component. For example, if you have a Grade 8 hex head cap screw, a Grade 8 washer and a Grade 5 nut, you only have a Grade 5 assembly. The same goes for metric and stainless-steel fastening systems, as well.

When you purchase fasteners, it’s important to purchase each component together. This will ensure you have a complete fastening system in the correct grade.
